Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has a genuine fascination with specialized training methods. Having previously spoken at a leadership summit over the summer about his plan to draw management lessons from fighter pilots, Arteta recently put that idea into practice. Following Arsenal's victory over Newcastle in the Premier League, he undertook a three-day program learning from Royal Air Force (RAF) fighter pilots, in search of better ways to communicate with his players.

"Cut the Waffle"
According to Arteta, the RAF's single most defining characteristic is its refusal to waste words. As he put it, when the RAF needs to communicate, the stakes are often a matter of life and death — which demands the most concise instructions possible, with no superfluous language whatsoever. Indeed, "clear, direct, and never long-winded" is one of the RAF's most celebrated operating principles.

The Discipline of Communication
The RAF trains its personnel so that all communication conveys its core intent as effectively and as quickly as possible. In a crisis scenario, if a single word will suffice, it is never expanded into a lengthy explanation. At the critical moment of a life-or-death decision, if one word can solve the problem, you never use ten.
The RAF also maintains a standardized vocabulary and a set of precise commands covering flight maneuvers, coordinated tactics, crisis management, and the demands of high-speed decision-making — all designed to eliminate ambiguity and prevent misunderstanding. When an error or a risk is detected, it must be spoken aloud and corrected immediately; concealment and delay are never tolerated (as in the case of danger warnings, role handovers, and coordinated rescue operations).
RAF會教導軍士所有通訊必須在最短時間內有效表達核心意圖，例如危機情境下若一詞一語已足夠，絕不延伸為冗長敘述。在生死決策關鍵時刻，「一個字」能解決絕不用「十個字」。
RAF亦有一套標準術語及精確指令，涵蓋飛行動作、協同戰術、危機處理、高速決斷需求，避免歧義與錯誤理解，遇見錯誤或風險要立刻直言、修正，不容隱瞞或拖延（如危險警示、崗位切換、協作援救）等。
